Education is at the basis of all Barbara’s work as an expressive arts facilitator. Her many courses and workshops give teachers, caregivers, parents and trainers the confidence, skills and resources to encourage creative and artistic development in children of all ages.

Creative Development Workshops for Caregivers and Trainers
Encouraging Creativity in Children
Nurturing the child’s natural abilities to sing, tell stories, dance, make art and music enhances the healthy development of the whole child. Topics covered in this presentation include: the link between artistic expression and brain development; stages of the creative process; components of stimulating and supportive environments; and the value and importance of exploration, process and discovery. Tell Me A Story
Discover simple and practical methods to engage and hold children’s attention during story time. Learn a variety of techniques to make up stories with children and how to bring the story to life through dramatic play.
Tell Me A Personal Story: Teaching Through Stories
Family stories are a gold mine of information that can provide children with lessons, values, role models and a sense of identity and belonging. Discover how to develop anecdotes from your own personal history into “teaching stories”. Learn how to use these stories as springboards for discussion, and to encourage children to tell their stories.
Sounds and Rhythms
You don’t have to be a singer or a musician to bring music into the pre school. Learn the basic concepts of beat, rhythm, pitch, tempo and timbre, and experiment with vocal sounds, body percussion, found sounds and percussion toys and simple rhythms. Discover how to create in the moment music with children. Emphasis is on the playful discovery of rhythm through an open ended structure.
Discover how to create an area in your center that will promote calmness, stillness and an appreciation for beauty. In this hands on workshop you will create your own Serenity Corner out of fabric, natural objects and images.
Move and Grow 1: Brain Dance
Developed by Dance Educator, Anne Green Gilbert, the BrainDance is a “series of exercises, comprised of eight fundamental movement patterns that we move through in the first year of life. Research has shown that these patterns are crucial to the wiring of the central nervous system, and lay the foundation for sensory-motor development and life long learning”. Barbara introduces the patterns and presents a variety of ways to incorporate the Brain Dance into your day.
Move and Grow 2: Music and Movement
Movement plays a vital and crucial role in learning and brain development. As caregivers, we can encourage children to move their bodies in a variety of ways. Come and explore the movement concepts of body and spatial awareness and learn how to apply these concepts to ECE curriculum. Discover how to choose and use music. Learn how to integrate movement experiences throughout the day. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water.
Move and Grow 3: Language Play
Movement plays a vital and crucial role in learning and brain development. As caregivers, we can provide many opportunities for children to move their bodies This workshop provides a variety of ways to combine movement with language to enhance the learning environment . Discover how to take simple nursery rhymes, short phrases and stories into movement. Emphasis is placed on developing language and listening skills, through linguistic, kinesthetic and musical intelligence. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water.
Integrating Creative Movement (combination of Move and Grow programs)
Movement plays a vital and crucial role in learning and brain development. As caregivers it is important for us to integrate movement experiences throughout the day. Come and explore the movement concepts of body and spatial awareness and learn how to apply these concepts to ECE curriculum. Discover how to choose music and take short word phrases and nursery rhymes into movement. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water.
Dancing with Young Children: Planning a Lesson
This workshop provides the non dancer with the resources and confidence to offer creative dance experiences. Explore the basic concepts of dance: body awareness, space, time and force. Discover how to choose and use a wide variety of music. Learn how to plan a 20 minute lesson with open ended structures that children will love dancing to. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water.
Discover how to provide rich and stimulating art environments for the preschool child in this experiential workshop. Experiment with a full range of art materials. Learn about the developmental stages of children’s art, and why the process of making art is more important than the end result. Some supplies provided.
